Prince George's County is one of the largest counties in Maryland, and we are upfront that we serve part of it, not all of it. Our area is the southern and eastern side, the part closest to the Patuxent River and to our base in Deale: Upper Marlboro, Bowie, Clinton, Brandywine, and Accokeek. This half of the county is more rural and more spread out than the communities inside the Beltway. Upper Marlboro and Brandywine still have working farms, horse properties, and long private lanes, alongside large newer subdivisions. Clinton and Bowie are established suburban communities, with thousands of homes built from the 1960s through the 1980s whose driveways have reached or passed the end of their life. Accokeek, out along Indian Head Highway near the Potomac, is wooded and low density. The soil across this part of the county is heavy with clay. Clay holds water, softens under load when wet, and shrinks and swells with the seasons. It is the main reason older driveways here sink near the street and crack in the wheel paths, and it is why we put so much of our effort into the base and the drainage before paving.
