What asphalt industry guidance says about driveways
The Colorado Asphalt Pavement Association's driveway best-practices brief, published by the Asphalt Institute, says the subgrade should be graded smooth, cleared of organic material, and have weak spots undercut and replaced. It says a base of 6 to 8 inches of crushed aggregate is usually adequate, topped by a 2-inch asphalt bottom course and a 1.5-inch surface course.
The same brief says a well-designed asphalt driveway will give trouble-free service for up to 20 years, and that while new asphalt can be driven on soon after it is placed, it is best to wait a few days.
The National Asphalt Pavement Association calls standing water the leading cause of driveway failure and says a written bid should state the pavement thickness, site preparation and drainage responsibilities, the payment schedule and the warranty.
