Water is the enemy of asphalt in three ways. Standing on the surface, it speeds up wear and finds every crack. Under the surface, it softens the base so the asphalt flexes and breaks. In winter it freezes, expands, and pries the pavement apart. This part of Maryland makes it harder: flat low lots near the Bay, high water tables, and clay that does not let water soak in.
South State Paving fixes driveway drainage as a standalone project or as part of a paving job. The first tool is always grading, shaping the surface so water runs off and away. When the lot will not allow that, we add structure: swales to carry water along the edge, channel drains across the front of a garage or at the bottom of a slope, catch basins at low points, and pipe to move the water to a place it can safely go.
The best time to fix drainage is when the driveway is being replaced, because everything is open and the grades can be reset. But we can often correct a problem on an existing driveway without redoing the whole thing.

Water pools in one spot on my driveway. Can that be fixed without replacing it?
Often, yes. Depending on the cause we can cut out and rebuild the low area to the correct grade, or install a drain at the low point. We will look at why it is holding water before recommending anything.
What is a channel drain?
A long, narrow grated drain set flush into the pavement, usually across the front of a garage or at the base of a sloped driveway. It catches water across the full width and pipes it away.
Where does the water go?
To a spot on your property where it can drain without causing a new problem, such as a lawn area with enough fall, a swale, or an existing drainage path. We plan the outlet before we install anything.
