South State Paving does grading and base work as the first phase of our own paving jobs and as standalone work for homeowners, builders, and property owners who need a site made ready. That includes excavating topsoil and unsuitable material, cutting and shaping the subgrade, establishing the slope so water drains away from buildings, hauling in and placing crushed stone, and compacting in lifts until it is tight.
The ground here makes this step count. Coastal plain soils run from loose sand to heavy clay, sometimes in the same yard. Low lots near the Bay and the rivers deal with a high water table. Clay subgrades that seem firm in August turn to pudding in March. Good base work accounts for that with the right depth of stone, fabric where the ground calls for it, and grades that keep water moving.
We also regrade existing gravel lanes and parking areas, build pads for garages, sheds, and equipment, and correct grades that send water toward a house or garage.

We look at the ground, the slope, and where the water goes, then lay out the fix.
Topsoil and soft material come out. Subgrade is cut and shaped to drain.
Crushed stone placed in layers and compacted until it is tight.
Final grade set so water runs off and away. Ready for stone, tar and chip, or asphalt.

How deep should the stone base be under a driveway?
It depends on the soil and the traffic. Firm, well-drained ground carrying cars needs less. Soft clay, wet ground, or regular heavy trucks need more. We size it to your site rather than using one number for every job.
Can you just do the base and let me pave later?
Yes. It is a common approach on new construction. The base carries construction traffic, settles in, and gets paved at the end of the build.
Water runs toward my garage. Can grading fix that?
In many cases, yes. Reshaping the grade to move water away is the first and best option. When the lot does not allow enough slope, we add drainage to pick up the water and carry it off.
